Galveston

For Labor Day Weekend, we took our first road trip to Galveston.  Ari spent many family vacations there as a child and was very excited to start that tradition with Dana.  Our neighbors, who we share the nanny with, were kind enough to invite us to come down there with them and stay at the husband's family condo.  It was a beautiful condo on the east side of Galveston Island.

We headed down Friday evening, hoping to get a sleeping baby most of the way down.  Dana had other plans for us.  She fell asleep at 7 PM, but by 9 PM decided she didn't want to sleep anymore. So we had to pull over and I had to play games with her the rest of the way down.  Finally, about 30 minutes from Galveston, she fell asleep.

We spent Saturday being lazy bones around the condo.  Ari went down to the Gulf with the husband and their older son.  Saturday afternoon we vegged a little more and then decided to take Dana down to the Gulf in the late afternoon.  Dana was not so happy with that idea.  That evening, we headed out for dinner at the Strand and ate some yummy ice cream.

Sunday was swimming day.  We started out early taking the kids to the Gulf.  Dana still did not enjoy the Gulf again. It was really windy and there were lots of waves since Hermine was starting to head towards making landfall (which we didn't know about until we got home on Monday). Dana did enjoy the pool though. It was warm and calm and Mommy and Daddy could hold her the whole time.  After our afternoon naps, Daddy wanted to drive around the Island to show Mommy everything.  We drove up and down the seawall and tried to find the old Jewish synagogue building.  Galveston has the oldest Jewish community in Texas, since the port was set up to take in all the immigrants that couldn't get in through Ellis Island, including some of Ari's ancestors. We had some yummy pizza for dinner with some of our neighbor's family who came down from Houston.

Monday we got up early to head back to Dallas, and thank goodness we did.  Hermine started to make her landfall and Galveston and Houston got hammered with rain about 2 hours after we left.  It was a wonderful trip to Galveston and we look forward to our next family vacation.
